Applying Feng Shui To Your Home

One of the newest home decorating trends is Feng Shui. This style has created a dynamic impact on today’s home decorating styles. From full sized wall murals in Oriental colors and simple designs of orange blossoms, or stark brown trees on pumpkin orange, to the minute details caused by treating walls with texture created from sand instead of wallpaper, the Feng Shui impact has left a print on the home decorating industry that will remain around for several years.

At first, feng shui is a complex decorating scheme that is almost impossible to implement in the average household. In true feng shui fashion, this truth is balanced with simplicity that the most novice home decorator can successfully create in their own home.

The feng shui home trends are based on a clutter-free, clean space with a fresh sense of renewal. The American and European décor designs use dead or open spaces to display wealth in the form of art, curio cabinets, entertainment units, and collections.

This fills a home with ‘dead’ items that have no soul and create a negative effect on the human soul. A sense of renewal is created by returning people to nature. This is not to be confused with ‘going back to nature’ or bringing in items from nature, like shower sheets with bears on them.

Instead, it involves bringing elements from nature into the home in a way that touches the soul and helps humans reconnect with a more peaceful and satisfying existence.

This is done by simply bringing fresh items like flowering plants, and/or decor elements in fresh gentle colors of the natural elements. The most common are apple green, deep brown, clear blue, and gentle yellow.

There are a million ways these colors can be added to any room without overpowering the room and changing the mood. Replace the ceramic roosters with quartz crystals or river rocks. Toss out the dead branches and bring in a live tree. Replace the repetitive patterned wallpaper with a wall mural that depicts a single tree, sparse and simple, with a single brilliant red blossom.

The first step to creating a feng shui look is to toss all the clutter in the garbage. Remove everything that does not serve a purpose. Hide televisions and DVD collections. However, hiding them is not enough. Any item that is not used at least once a month needs to be removed from the room and stored.

In many homes, this will result in several empty shelves. If there is no backing on these shelves, paint a water scene behind. If there is a backing, consider removing the shelving unit all together. You do not always need to paint natural scenes on the walls. Water can be depicted by hanging a mirror.

There are a few things to avoid. Never include the color red. Even small amounts of red in candles or trim on a book, will disrupt the room’s impact on your emotions.

There are some simple ways to turn a bare looking room into a feng shui room. A large vase with a few bamboo sticks in it. Replace wood along the doors with metal or mirrors. Add texture to walls using grass wallpaper, sand, or murals. Each of these treatments have basic, novice, and expert levels. It only takes a little time to find the project that you need to make your home perfect.

Design for Harmony

Paying specific attention to the order, aesthetics, and positive sentiments integral to decorating any area according to Feng Shui principles, makes every day special. The purpose of Feng Shui, an ancient art of creating harmony in your environment, is to help you live a balanced and pleasant life. If this objective is reflected everywhere within your home, you will feel pleased and contented every day. Feng Shui, teaches you to cherish the balance and harmony of each moment, even when you are undertaking tasks that usually feel ordinary and tedious.

Most of us have encountered the effect improving the atmosphere of our home or workplace can make on our attitude. Think back to the last time you decorated your home for a party. How wonderful it made you feel to engulf it in a feeling of joy and celebration. Feng Shui operates in a similar fashion. The difference, however, is, using Feng Shui, you place objects with the specific goal of altering the energy in a room to become increasingly positive. Feng Shui creates a sense of balance, providing a space with an orderly and tranquil arrangement inducing calmness and happiness when you are there. Thus you will begin to greet every day, not just holidays with harmony and joy.

Employing the art of Feng Shui, it is easy to make your home or office seem special, even if you know nothing about interior design or aesthetics. When decorating in accordance with the Feng Shui tradition, you adhere to simple fixed rules that will guide you in the creation of an environment where you and those you love will take pleasure in spending time. With Feng Shui acting as a guide you can develop the appearance and feeling of an area. Following Feng Shui principles will assist you in forming the correct decisions about everything from furniture placement to light systems. With Feng Shui, you will learn to create beauty and re-create your home environment or your work space. By increasing the aesthetic pleasure you can enjoy any Feng Shui environment on a daily basis.

The incorporation of Feng Shui into your home or workplace is boundless in how much it can improve your quality of life, or increase your happiness and feeling of tranquility. Whether you believe yourself be aesthetically sensitive or not, you will remain unaware of how great a negative impact your décor and furniture arrangements may be have on you until you change them for the better and start enjoying the end result. After frequenting any space decorated in a Feng Shui manner, you will feel fortunate to be a part of such a calm, ordered, and harmonious environment. When Feng Shui assumes the responsibility for enveloping you on all sides with beauty, even the simplest everyday jobs become special.

feng shui question about crystals?

I want to burry a crystal in the wealth area of my back yard. Has anyone else done this? I read about this somewhere, but don’t remember where.

Normally, you have to use the characteristics of the five elements inside the house. If you use the 8 aspirations method of Feng Shui, the Wealth area is in the Southeast. However, you should also have a look to the Flying Stars method, if you want to have beneficial energy. You can find a lot of information here, for both methods:

A Feng Shui question?

I heard that placing a frog outside of the house facing towards the entrance door is lucky for wealth. Is any frog can be placed outside of the house or it has to be three legs one. I have one frog statue who has a crown on his head and sitting on a chair. It has four legs, and I wanted to place it outside of my house facing towards entrance door. I just wanted to know if I can do it or the frog has to have three legs. Thank you very much.

The simple answer to your question is that the frog you want to use to activate for wealth will not work. The Money Toad, called Chan Chu in Chinese, you are referring to has specific Feng Shui requirements in order for it to work as a Feng Shui cure.

First off, it is not a frog, it is a toad. A toad does not have smooth skin like a frog. Toads have warts, which is important from a Feng Shui perspective. The warts on the toad is meant to symbolically absorb negative energy for you. There might be negative energy blocking you from reaching your wealth potential. This is why a regular frog will not work.

The second point is if you look at the back of the Money Toad you will find the configuration of the Big Dipper on its back. This is important, because the Toad needs to attract the energy of the Big Dipper. There are some imitation toads on the market that do not have this configuration and they prove to be ineffective. You need to make sure the Money Toad has the Big Dipper on its back.

The third point is that the Money Toad has to have a old Chinese coin, call an I Ching Coin, place in its mouth. The coin needs to be always be in the toad’s mouth, to symbolizes that you are attaining your wealth. Usually the Money Toad is also designed sitting on a pile of gold coins or nuggets to show it will help you accumulate your wealth.

The final point is the Money Toad has only three legs, not four. The number three is significant, because it represents the Trinity of Life, bring together the energies of Heaven, Earth, and Man. So it can not have four legs, three legs are a must for the Money Toad.

As you can see, the use of cures in Feng Shui have very specific guidelines and not just anything will do. In order for the cures to work, you must have specific traits for the cures you want to use. Substitutes will not work.

Good luck.

Please help me with the placement of my bed with feng shui?

I’m female. The Horse is my Chinese sign. If you know feng shui, my "number" thing (not sure what it’s called) is "ken". I want to keep my tv in the room (I know it’s bad) but the cable is the southwest corner of my room (the wealth corner) and the only place I can put my tv is sitting on top of my big dresser (which I must place based on where my bed is) and then my bed must be face towards it (so I can watch tv comfortably) but according to the ken number, it’s very bad for my head to face either South, East, North, or Southeast. I can’t have my bed at weird angles (I know going against the flow of a room is bad also). I’m very confused, I can send you a bagua map with the setup of my room for a better idea. You’re wasting your time if you say feng shui doesn’t work. I believe in chi and the flow of chi and energy.

- wouldn’t it be simpler to just give me your birth date?

You’re wasting your time if you say feng shui doesn’t work. I believe in chi and the flow of chi and energy.
- first you need to understand that fengshui is based on chi/ energy, this energy is not what most people think it is, it cannot be sensed nor felt, even if you are a psychic. it can only be predicted by using the fengshui techniques/ concepts. chi occupies space. chi can be either good or bad or it can be both in some instances. for example, an area good for business might not be good for raising children. bad chi can affect the good chi. and a house contains many kinds of chi, which interacts with each other, most people describe this as the flow of chi or chi distribution. so, the more space you have good chi the better the outcome will be. i want to emphasize that a house needs to be at least 2/3′s or 67% of space that has good fengshui or it won’t have any effect on your life or that of the occupants. this is still true even if you are just renting a room in a big house. bec the bad chi from other areas can affect your bedroom. meaning having a good fengshui in your bedroom does not make you rich, it does not make you more intelligent, it also does not make you sleep better. there are books like lillian too’s book on 8 mansions or ba zhai that talks about facing your bed. but she did not include in her books the real purpose of this method, which is how to locate and position the stove/ rice cooker/ microwave/ anything that you cook or heat up in your house to attract money – yes, if you want to attract money pay a good fengshui pro to do your kitchen!

going back to facing the bed… when you face your bed to your success direction, it does not make you richer, it only makes your mind more sensitive to money and business issues; to the romance/ love direction, more senstive to feelings of others and being attentive at the school also falls in this area, stability and calm, makes you have peace of mind. facing the bed is your foot must be pointing the favorable direction when you are lying down the bed. i also thought the same thing as you did… but 2 fengshui masters already confirmed that this is not what it meant. using this method in the kitchen is more effective.

the bagua map/ black hat is also bogus, bec they are stating that when you put a bathroom in the career area then your career will go down the drain. just imagine how are you going to built a house with no bathrooms??? this is not fengshui.

read eva wong’s a master course in fengshui.. she teaches the flying star method in that book. flying star method is more powerful than 8 mansions.

Did anyone have a similar experience with Feng Shui?

I just moved in February into this cozy newly renovated home. I absolutely fell in love with it! I was living with my mother in law and I was about ready to kill myself because I could not stand her living conditions. I was about ready to go to the mental ward!!! Now that I’ve moved, I have so much peace of mind and I feel so much more relaxed. I can actually go shoe less because I have clean floors! Anyways, my husband was unemployed for 3 months now, and had a really low pay rate at his last job. I tried my best at using the principles of Feng Shui in my decorating at our new house. I had my fish tank in the Creativity sector and it just felt wrong. I moved it to my wealth sector and a week later, my husband became employed, in an excellent paying job. I was never this happy! Is it likely to be Feng Shui at work? Or is it a coincidence? My house is definitely relaxing and peaceful compared to what we used to have to deal with. It is worth the hard work and research, I believe.

Honestly you and your husband just leaving the other place is probably what made you relax, however feng shui cannot hurt. The mear fact you have a relaxing home will make you feel better and want to do better for your self. I know I have been there. Good luck..

Is it bad to celebrate on the 4th day of a month?

Feng Shui experts, can you help me? My niece is going to celebrate her 1st birthday on May 4, 2008 (Sunday). I’ve been hearing alot about the number 4 and they say its bad and all.

What advice can you give? My sister already gave out invitations for the birthday of her daughter so I was suprised when I saw in the invitation its doing to be celebrated on a 4.

Is there a cure for this? Should I tell this to my sister immediately so that she can change the date of the party?

First off, in Feng Shui we DO use the # 4, it does not mean death and it is not a bad number. In fact, the # 4 is used to boost creativity and academic luck. The reason most Cantonese speaking folks do not like the number four is because phonetically it sounds like the word for "death." However, that is just superstition and nothing to do with real and true Feng Shui.

Secondly, date selection, although is tied into Feng Shui is NOT Feng Shui. Feng Shui is about manipulating your envrionmental energy and chi. Date Selection is used in Feng Shui to pick an auspicious date to start construction, grand openings, and other major events. However, it is not part of the Feng Shui practice, but rather a supplement to the practice.

I just check my Chinese Almanac, which list the good and bad days for the year, and May 4th is not a good day and therefore, not recommended for any major events. However, since this is a birthday celebration, the good energy brought about by the happy occassion would negate the bad energy of the day. If possible, you can advise your sister to start the party sometime between 1 – 3 pm, because that is an auspicious hour according to the Almanac.

Do not worry too much about the date of an event, unless it has to do with constructions, grand opening,s moving homes, weddings, or major events. This is a one year old birthday party, so relax and enjoy the day. Using May 4th will not bring hardship to your niece or her parents or any there. The #4 is used in Feng Shui.

Party on.

How do you Feng Shui an apt with the door entrance facing the South?

I was born Feb. 11, 1984 and am a female. My apartment door faces south (190 degrees) but a little more closer to the south east side. I’m using what I think is the western school of feng shui in that my apartment layout in divided into 9 squares:
Empty area and a quarter of my bedroom where the widow is in the NW corner and number 6
Bedroom is in the North and number 1
Bathroom is in the North East (toliet does not face the door but may face either south or NW) and number 8
Patio area is in the West and number 7
Living room and a quarter of my bedroom is in the center and number 5
Dining room is in the East and is number 3
Storage room outside and a quarter of my living room is South West and number 2
Entrance to the house and 2/3 of my living room is in the South and number 9 (the door is more to the SW side of the wall)
Kitchen is in the South East and is number 4

My lucky corners are NW, W, SW,and NE and
My unlucky areas are N, S, SE, and E.

I am very worried about my bedroom being in the north corner because that’s my career area as well being the water element area, my northwest corner where helpfulpeople and travel has only a quarter of my bedroom where the widow is on that side of the wall and is empty, my entrance is a fire element but is an unlucky direction according to my kua number and my kitchen is my wealth a prosperity but is in an unlucky corner… what can i do to help remedy is problem? I’m buying new furniture and am considering painting my walls. I would like to have strong love, career and health corners.

Do not be wary of this, in Fengshui there are many schools. Kua numbers is just one of the school. In recent years some Fengshui masters have already discarded the Kua theory as not sensible, becos of it consist only East and West grp of ppl. Which is not right as there are so many type of ppl with so many kinds of Bazi combinations, how could there be only 2 grps?
Therefore I suggest that you go for the Bazi School which is close to the San-He Theory.
